Treatment process

Here at Southern Smiles, we get immense satisfaction from helping people achieve their dental goals. As part of that process and before we start your smile design we’ll provide you with a bespoke treatment plan. This may include one or more cosmetic dental treatment options.

As a result, you can expect to see the following cosmetic dentistry procedures:

Dental Bridges and Dental Crowns Miranda

For those with one or several missing teeth, a good solution may be to fit one or more dental crowns or a bridge. Combined with dental implants they have the ability to restore full bite function. This is also an ideal solution for those patients in Sutherland Shire who struggle with limited dentition.

Traditionally, when it comes to dental bridges, Sutherland/Miranda residents have two options.

• A traditional dental bridge which needs the support of adjacent teeth, or,

• A bridge supported by a stand-alone dental implant

Either way, all our dental crowns in Miranda will be colour matched to blend in seamlessly with the rest of your teeth to give you a flawless smile .

Just as we do with any treatment, before fitting we take into account factors such as

• Bite

• Any lost facial height

• Best support of both cheeks and lips

Once your new dental crowns and/or dental bridges in Miranda have been designed, they’re permanently fitted, allowing you to live the life you really want to with renewed confidence.

Teeth whitening in the Sutherland Shire

Here at Southern Smiles, we use both Opalescence teeth whitening and Pola teeth whitening. They’re available either as an in-office treatment or in a professional teeth whitening kit form that can be used at home. Both types offer the best teeth whitening methods in terms of safety and
teeth whitening results

Porcelain veneers

One of the most popular treatments for teeth is porcelain veneers. Miranda residents might be surprised to know that porcelain veneers can cover a wide variety of defects including blemished or badly stained teeth, slightly chipped or cracked teeth, crooked teeth and even unevenly spaced teeth.

Porcelain veneers otherwise known as dental veneers or laminates are thin shells made from layers of porcelain and are incredibly strong. They’re made to fit over the front surface of your tooth just like a protective cover. Once in place, they can last for many years and are colour matched to blend in seamlessly with the rest of your smile. As a result, there is usually a massive difference between the look of teeth before and after.

So how does the process work?

• X-rays are taken of your mouth using advanced OPG equipment.

• Once we’re certain there are no underlying problems and you’re happy to continue we’ll begin preparatory work.

• A thin layer of tooth enamel is removed (less than 1mm) so that any porcelain veneers sit flush with the rest of your teeth.

• Next, a dental impression is taken and sent off to the lab where your permanent porcelain veneers will be fabricated. In the meantime, you’ll be fitted with a set of temporary veneers.

• During this time you can test out your new trial smile.

• Finally, after around 2-3 weeks you’ll be called back to have your permanent porcelain veneers fitted.

Using this process we can restore the look and function of your smile to its former glory.

Professional in-office teeth whitening in Sutherland Shire

The beauty of in-chair teeth whitening in Sutherland Shire is that the whole process can be performed in less than sixty minutes, so you can in effect have whiter, brighter teeth in as little as a lunch hour. It’s a perfect treatment for sprucing up your teeth for a special occasion or as a longer-term solution. Here’s how the process works…

• After a quick consultation, we’ll decide together on the degree of whiteness you’d like your teeth to be.

• Next we’ll cover your gums and lips, exposing your teeth.

• A teeth whitening gel containing hydrogen or carbamide peroxide is then applied. Depending on the brand, this may or may not need to be activated using a handheld light.

• The gel is left on for 10-15 minutes to work its magic and is then rinsed off.

• After checking, the gel is reapplied and the whole system is repeated until the desired shade of teeth whitening has been reached.

Teeth whitening using the in-chair method is very popular, primarily because most people see a noticeable difference right away, although teeth will continue to whiten for several days after. This is in contrast to teeth whitening treatment using a take-home whitening kit

Botox fillers and muscle relaxants

We know what you may be thinking…”Why would I visit a dentist for Botox injections and muscle relaxants?” Miranda residents may be surprised to know that in reality, we’re perfectly positioned to carry out this type of treatment. Why? Because as dentists we’re trained to safely administer injections with the minimum of discomfort.

Aside from this, Botox treatment is all about rejuvenating the face by banishing facial wrinkles and improving facial aesthetics. As modern holistic dentists, this is something we’re particularly interested in for our patients, especially for those looking to improve their smiles.

Often if a person undergoes restorative dental procedures, it can change their smile and as such we may use Botox or dermal fillers to fully enhance these procedures. We either deliver Botox injections as part of a smile makeover in conjunction with other treatments or as a stand-alone procedure for those looking to turn back the clock on ageing.

So what is Botox?

It’s actually a trade name for a neurotoxin derived from Clostridium Botulinum. This, in turn, is a purified protein found naturally in the environment. In addition to facial rejuvenation, it’s commonly used to stop excessive sweating and to treat some muscular disorders and migraines.

So how does the process of Botox actually work?

When Botox is injected into the skin in extremely small concentrations it paralyses muscle movement by temporarily blocking neurotransmitters. Muscles need this chemical transmitter in order to contract. In blocking these signals Botox injections allow the muscles to become less stiff, and as a result, softens the appearance of frown lines formed between the eyebrows and lines around the eyes, otherwise known as crow’s feet.

So why do we get wrinkles when we age?

We’re born with a plentiful amount of hyaluronic acid (HA) in our bodies but this diminishes with age leaving the skin less supported. In addition, when teeth are lost, the jaw bone naturally shrinks which also causes the facial tissue to sag.

Using a combination of dermal fillers which add volume to targeted folds and wrinkles, and Botox injections, which soften the appearance of wrinkles that appear when we smile, laugh or frown, volume can be restored to the face to reveal a fresher, brighter appearance.

So what does the Botox process involve?

• After a consultation, we’ll apply a topical anaesthetic cream to the area.

• Next a series of Botox injections and/or dermal fillers are delivered to the desired area.

• Any discomfort is minimal as the treatment takes just a few minutes, or slightly longer with dermal fillers.

• Any dermal filler/Botox injections are carefully controlled and are very quick, so patients may feel a slight stinging at the time, but nothing more.

• Where the Botox injections have taken place patients may see slight bumps on the skin, but this usually disappears within an hour or so.

How long does treatment last?

With both Botox and dermal fillers treatment effects are usually visible within 1-2 weeks and generally peak at around 5-6 weeks. Typically Botox lasts for around 4-6 months whereas dermal fillers last somewhere between 18-24 months.

Take-Home Teeth Whitening Treatments in Miranda

This type of teeth whitening kit shouldn’t be confused with the over-the-counter whitening kits you get from any chemist or local store. These are professional teeth whitening treatments which are designed to be used in the comfort of your own home but which can whiten teeth faster than many store-bought varieties. This is how they work…

• After an initial visit to our practice, we’ll take an impression of your mouth

• From this, your personalised teeth whitening trays are made.

• Once your trays are ready you’ll take them home along with measured amounts of whitening gel to wear over your teeth.

• In some cases, trays can be worn during the day, and in others, they can be worn overnight.

• After wearing them for several weeks you’ll have noticeably whiter teeth.
